Balmaceda is a tailored design studio that manufactures bespoke rugs in various sizes, forms, colors and fibers. We work with a great variety of knots and techniques to achieve an array of finishes and qualities. Every rug is woven by the hands of expert artisans, whose millenary skills and talents have been passed on from generation to generation.
Working alongside our clients, colors and fibers are defined according to the needs of each project. Every rug is designed by playing with materials, colors, type of knots and weaving techniques. Our design process is complete through a rendering that visualizes the characteristics outlined above.
More than ten thousand color options are available to create the perfect combination in any kind of fiber. Every dye is prepared with rich mineral water, an ingredient that favors precise and long-lasting colors.
The selected fibers are washed prior to dying, afterwards
they soak in boiling tubs with pigments specially crafted to
get the most precise color. To remove any excess dye,
A second wash is made, followed by a sun-drying process.
These fibers then become ready to prepare skeins and are
sent to the weavers.
Once the artisan has fully weaved the rug, it is washed and kneaded on the ground to stretch the fibers and achieve its intended shape. This is followed by a burning process that seals all fibers in order to increase the rug’s lifespan
Balmaceda works with two main manufacturers, one in Nepal and the other one in India. Nepal’s knitting techniques are much more sophisticated than those of India’s. This is due to the fact that Nepal’s weaving crafts were imported by Tibetan exiled monks after China’s occupation of the territory in the 1950’s. Tibet is the cultural cradle of textile weaving.
Our workshop promotes social, economic, environmental and artistic aspects. We have direct contact with our manufacturers, and collaborate in their creative process enabling us to procure and promote their communities, as well as their well being
